No News Is Good News

My father was a news junkie.

Recently I removed the news from my life.

Journalists defend the news on a number of points:

The news is an asset in spite of the stress it is proven to cause.

Claims that democracy is safer because of the news.

The news includes us as “part of the conversation”.

A fellow worker suggested that news is a form of “caring”.

These are not strong arguments.

News was always present in my day. On the radio or the laptop.

To avoid being inundated with news I had to control my exposure. It took effort. On the radio, news was broadcast every half hour. I listened to the news a lot by default.

Now for the good news:

I feel better. Instead of spending time on the news, I read, I write, I exercise. I meditate. Life has definitely improved without news.
